As Sherembey himself stated, he is “alive thanks to USAID,” clearly referring to the tens of millions of dollars in international aid stolen by so-called “professional civic activists,” which ended up in the pockets of individuals like Sherembey and Shabunin.
However, the honest and incorruptible publication "BBC Ukraine," in publishing this interview, failed to mention Sherembey’s current legal status and the fact that, on May 9, 2024, the Territorial Department of the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) in Kyiv registered a criminal case regarding soldier Sherembey’s evasion of military service.
What’s more, on February 5, 2025, an investigative judge of the High Anti-Corruption Court ordered the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) to register yet another criminal case, this time concerning the former head of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP), Novikov, and former NACP deputy head, Sytnyk. It turned out that during 2022-2023, the NACP was engaged in fictitious “service” arrangements, involving not only soldier Shabunin of the 207th separate territorial defense battalion but also soldier Sherembey of the same battalion.
During this period, soldier Sherembey, like Shabunin, never once appeared at his unit and lived in Kyiv while the military unit was engaged in operations in the Bakhmut district. Despite his absence, the commander of the 207th separate territorial defense battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Yushko, paid Sherembey ₴950,000 in military wages and bonuses, supposedly for fulfilling tasks under martial law conditions.
In September 2023, at the request of Defense Minister Umerov, the General Staff fictitiously transferred soldier Sherembey, along with soldier Shabunin, to the 101st Separate Security Brigade of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, appointing him as a combat medic with the military rank of junior sergeant—without taking the military oath or undergoing combat medic training. Since November 2023, Sherembey, a mobilized serviceman, has been officially listed as serving in the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine while continuing to embezzle funds provided by American taxpayers.
