Odessa Customs Official Caught Taking Bribes

14 January, 13:02
An acting deputy head and head of the customs clearance department at one of the Odessa Customs posts has been caught systematically demanding bribes from businesses and individuals.

These bribes were allegedly solicited in exchange for expedited customs clearance and avoiding artificial obstacles in the process.

Details of the Scheme

For various bribe amounts, the official reportedly “guaranteed” faster customs clearance of goods without mandatory forms of customs control. Refusal to pay resulted in deliberate delays or outright denials of clearance. Law enforcement documented incidents of illegal enrichment totaling $2,500. The official was apprehended during the transfer of the second portion of a bribe.

Legal Proceedings

Based on the collected evidence, the individual has been charged under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which addresses extortion and receipt of unlawful benefits by an official.

The charges carry a potential penalty of up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property. The accused has been taken into custody and suspended from their position pending further investigation.

Broader Implications

This case highlights ongoing issues of corruption within Ukraine’s customs services, undermining trust in public institutions and obstructing trade efficiency. Authorities emphasize their commitment to combating such practices and ensuring accountability among officials.
